Art and Design Intent

At Bottesford Junior School, we are artists.

At Bottesford Junior School, we recognise that Art and Design is an essential part of a broad and balanced curriculum. Through high-quality teaching, we aim to inspire curiosity, creativity and imagination in every child. Our art curriculum provides opportunities for pupils to express themselves, explore ideas, and communicate what they see, feel and think through colour, texture, form, pattern and a variety of materials and techniques.

We want all children to develop confidence and resilience as artists. Through a process of exploration, experimentation and redrafting, pupils learn that making mistakes is part of the creative journey. This approach builds perseverance, reflective thinking and problem-solving skills, helping children to develop both disciplinary and theoretical knowledge of art.

We expose children to a diverse range of artists, designers, architects and craftspeople from different cultures, times and backgrounds, broadening their cultural capital and helping them appreciate the world around them. These studies often link to other areas of the curriculum, giving children a deeper understanding of how art connects to history, geography, science and wider society.

By the end of Key Stage 2, our aim is for all children to be:

  • Adventurous, creating imaginative pieces using a range of media.
  • Independent, developing their own unique artistic style.
  • Reflective, able to discuss and evaluate their work and that of others with respect and understanding.
  • Resilient, showing perseverance and pride in developing their ideas and skills over time.
  • Collaborative, supporting and learning from each other through constructive feedback.

Through our art curriculum, we nurture confident, expressive and culturally aware young artists who take pride in their achievements and see themselves as creative individuals with the potential to inspire and be inspired.
