Science Curriculum Intent

“Science – it’s like magic, but real.” – Arthur C Clarke

At Bottesford Juniors, we are scientists and we are curious about the world around us. We ask questions, plan experiments and hypothesise. When planning our experiments, we ensure that they are fair and we explain our results clearly. We make links with the natural world and investigate how it has evolved over time as well as discussing the sustainability aspects that are challenging the world that we live in at the moment. We want our children to be enthusiastic about science and be challenged to develop a deeper understanding of the science around them. We want our children to understand the important part that science has played in our world -from the development of medicines to cure diseases, to how it can change people’s lives. Most importantly, we want children to have fun and enjoy their lessons and be armed with the knowledge of a multitude of jobs that are available to them within the STEM sector. We want them to make a difference and to be involved in shaping our futures.

By the end of KS2, a Bottesford Junior School Scientist will:

  • Show respect for living organisms and the natural world around them.
  • Become an independent learner through investigating, researching and experimenting in science.
  • Develop their communication skills when working collaboratively to research areas of science and making their own discoveries.
  • Use kindness when challenging ideas and experimenting.
  • Work within the local community to make links between their learning and the world in which they live.
  • Be adventurous by questioning, investigating and experimenting.
  • Persevere and see projects and experiments through to the end to analyse results.

Have an understanding of the responsibility needed in being a good scientist and the importance of their role in this.
