Our Vision for English at Bottesford Junior School

At Bottesford Junior School, we aim to nurture confident, articulate, and enthusiastic readers and writers. When our children leave us, we want them to read fluently and with understanding, to express informed opinions about the texts they encounter, and most importantly, to develop a lifelong love of reading.

Through exposure to a wide range of authors, genres, and text types, our pupils are encouraged to explore their interests, discover new favourites, and appreciate the power of words to inform, inspire, and entertain.

We want every child to write with confidence, accuracy, and creativity for a variety of purposes and audiences. Our teaching supports children in developing their own unique writing style, while ensuring they apply grammar and spelling patterns correctly and present their work with pride in a neat, legible handwriting style.

A rich and varied vocabulary is at the heart of our curriculum. We encourage pupils to explore and use new words confidently in both formal and informal contexts, recognising that oracy is an essential life skill.

These English skills are woven throughout our curriculum, ensuring children apply their reading, writing, and speaking abilities across all subjects. We are committed to providing a rich and inclusive literacy environment that celebrates diversity, promotes equality, and challenges stereotypes — helping every child see themselves reflected in the stories they read and the words they write.
