Oracy

Oracy at Bottesford Junior School

At our school, we believe that developing confident, articulate speakers and active, respectful listeners is fundamental to children’s success—both in school and beyond. Our intent is to ensure that all pupils are able to express their thoughts clearly, listen and respond appropriately, and communicate effectively in a range of contexts through a strong focus on oracy.

In line with the National Curriculum for English, we aim to:

  • Enable pupils to speak fluently and confidently in front of others.
  • Encourage active listening and respectful dialogue.
  • Provide opportunities for children to participate in discussions, presentations, performances, role play, and debates.
  • Equip pupils with the skills to justify ideas, ask questions, and build upon the views of others.

How do we embed this in the daily life of our school?

Oracy is embedded throughout our curriculum and daily classroom life. Children are encouraged to share their ideas, take turns, and collaborate with others through group work, where discussion and teamwork are key to learning.

Pupils regularly take part in performances to their peers, parents, and the wider school community — including poetry recitals and class assemblies — helping them to develop confidence, expression, and clarity of speech.

Leadership and responsibility are promoted through opportunities such as School Council, PALs, and Eco Council, where children use their oracy skills to represent their peers, express ideas, and contribute to school improvement.

Children may also apply for leadership roles, for example Y6 House Captain, by preparing and presenting a written speech to their classmates, demonstrating their ability to plan, rehearse, and deliver spoken language effectively.

We further promote critical thinking and respectful communication through classroom debates, encouraging pupils to express opinions, listen to different viewpoints, and respond constructively.

Through these experiences, pupils develop the confidence, vocabulary, and communication skills needed to become thoughtful, articulate speakers and attentive listeners—skills that prepare them for lifelong learning and active citizenship.
